Salted Cinnamon Candy Apples | 27th and Olive

Last year I made my first ever Candy Apple. I can probably count the number of candy apples I have had in my lifetime… It isn’t many, but for some reason when I think of Halloween, I think of these! We made a dozen or so, and delivered them to all of Olive’s little friends (the ones who had teeth and could eat them)! This year we plan to do the same. If you have been following me for a little while, you will know that traditions are so important to me, and now that we have our own little family, it is time to start our own traditions. 

The recipe I’ve included below is the one we used last year. Next week I plan to tackle the infamous candy apple with a new recipe that I will share just in time for the spooky night! I loved these so much, that I couldn’t resist sharing them with you now! Let me know if you give it a whirl!

Ingredients
  1. 5-6 apples (washed and sticks inserted)
  2. 2 cups granulated sugar
  3. 1/2 cup water
  4. 2/3 cup corn syrup
  5. 10-15 drops red food color
  6. 1 tsp cinnamon candy flavouring
  7. 3-4 cups salted sunflower seeds (quantity depends on how much you dip!)
Instructions
  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Place sunflower seeds in a medium dish that is easy to dip into.
  3. Combine water, granulated sugar and corn syrup in 2 quart saucepan. Bring to a boil stirring constantly.
  4. Continue to boil until you reach 300 degrees (hard crack temperature).
  5. Remove from heat. Quickly and carefully add in your food colouring and candy flavour. Stir until well blended.
  6. Immediately start dipping and rolling your apples in the liquid candy. You may need to tilt the pan to cover the apples depending on their size.
  7. Dip the bottom of the apples into a the sunflower seeds. You may need to use your hands to push the sunflower seeds into the liquid candy (remember, the candy is HOT!!)
  8. Allow the apples to sit at room temperature to harden. Do not place in refrigerator.
  9. Store in an airtight container or wrap with plastic wrap.
Notes
  1. Do not make a double batch! If making more than 6 apples, start a new batch. The candy liquid hardens quickly and makes it difficult to coat the last few apples!
